Can I ask you to close your eyes?
2025
In the intimate settings of the Weggeefwinkel in Rotterdam and
Ballhaus Tucholski in Lodz, Germany, the performance "Can I ask you to close your eyes?"
unfolds as a delicate, one-on-one encounter.
This immersive experience strips away the distractions of the visual world,
inviting each participant into a shared space of trust and introspection.
The performance centers on the profound, often overlooked weight of a name—
the first gift and the first identity we receive.
Participants are guided to delve into the history and hidden stories
behind their own names, tracing the lineage of sounds and meanings
that have shaped their lives.
Through a series of gentle prompts, the artist and participant explore
the personal and ancestral narratives attached to the participant's name,
uncovering the myths and expectations it carries.
In this darkened, sightless state, the dialogue moves beyond logic.
Participants are encouraged to use their intuition to feel the resonance
of their identity, identifying which parts of their story still serve them and
which they are ready to release.
The encounter culminates in the co-creation of a personal, intuitive ritual.
This act is designed to symbolically "re-invent" one's path, allowing
the participant to reclaim their name not just as a label inherited from the past,
but as a conscious choice for the future.
By transforming the simple act of listening into a sacred space,
"Can I ask you to close your eyes?" offers a powerful moment of stillness.
It is a poetic exploration of identity that empowers
the individual to rewrite their own destiny through
the language of memory and ritual.
